Is there any way to add new menu areas to a theme? For example, would it be possible to add an area that spans the whole page, but under the header? Thanks for any replies.

Menu areas are defined in theme.php. Which theme are you using?

add {MENU=4} (change the 4 to the menu number eg {MENU=5}, {MENU=6} ) where ever you want the extra menus in your theme.php
